Site signage requirements for Victoria

Victoria’s building regulations require the display of permit information on building sites. This information must be placed in a prominent position on the building site and must remain for the duration of works. This requirement applies to both builders and owner-builders.

What is required to be displayed?

The builder named in the building permit must ensure that the following information is displayed in a conspicuous position (generally the front of the allotment) accessible to the public at the allotment to which the permit relates:

  • the registration numbers and contact details of the builder and the relevant building surveyor – which is the building surveyor that issued the building permit; and
  • the building permit number and the date of issue of the permit.

This information must be displayed before the commencement of the building work to which the building permit applies and remain visible and legible for the duration of the building work.

This requirement also applies to the demolition or removal of a building on a building allotment.

Victoria’s building regulations place a penalty for non-compliance of 10 Penalty Units. In Victoria as of 1 July 2024, 1 Penalty Unit equals $197.59.

What other information should be displayed?

To meet Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) obligations it is important that adequate safety signage is provided on site.

Victorian Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) regulations require principal contractors for construction projects with a permit value of $350,000 or more to display a sign showing the name and contact telephone numbers of the principal contractor.

The sign must be clearly visible from outside the workplace where the construction work is being performed.

Where can I get compliant site signs?

HIA provides signage that will satisfy both these Victorian Building Regulations and OH&S obligations.

The signs are available at the HIA Shop.
