Avoiding risks when building near trees

Tree roots can present problems during construction, particularly when building slab-on-ground houses. However, many issues can be avoided when proper precautions are adhered to.

This resource explains what steps can be taken prior to construction to minimise the impact of tree roots on house slabs. A working knowledge of root physiology will assist in understanding how to deflect roots and/or create a root barrier.

The resource explains that a cut-off wall method has traditionally been used for root barriers, but that there a number of drawbacks associated with it.

A case study is presented that relates to the installation of a backhoe root barrier drain and the subsequent impact of roots on the aggregate barrier. It documents the solution that was undertaken to upgrade the aggregate barrier.

As tree root science is an inexact one, caution should always be taken when considering installation of a barrier. Consulting with a tree arborist can assist with understanding how a tree’s root system can impact a house’s foundations.
