Glancing light can be defined as light that shines obliquely across the surface of a wall or ceiling. It illuminates imperfections in the ceiling or wall surface by creating a shadow on the other side of the imperfection or by revealing surface texture variations. Under a diffused light, these imperfections and texture variations wouldn’t be visible.
This resource outlines how situations in which glancing light occurs can be improved by installing soft furnishings, pelmets, curtains or blinds – or by redecorating with light matte finishes.
It also explains how increasing the angle of incidence of light onto a ceiling or adding several different light sources can overcome the effect of glancing light.
