A person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) has a primary duty of care to manage risks to workers’ health and safety, including psychosocial risks. These requirements outlined in this resource apply across all states and territories except Victoria.
Psychosocial hazards can arise from the design or management of work, the work environment, workplace interactions and behaviours. They can include high job demands, poor support or role clarity, remote or isolated work, exposure to traumatic events, bullying, harassment, violence and aggression.
Having a workplace mental health policy or responding to issues after they occur is not enough. PCBUs need to take a proactive approach to identifying psychosocial hazards, assessing the risks they create and implementing appropriate control measures to eliminate or minimise those risks so far as is reasonably practicable.
This detailed resource explains how psychosocial risk requirements affect your business, what you need to consider when determining appropriate control measures and the steps you can take to meet your WHS obligations. It also provides links to jurisdiction-specific Codes of Practice and regulator guidance, along with further resources to help you maintain a mentally healthy workplace.
