Safe Work Australia guide for rooftop solar installation

Safe Work Australia (SWA) has published a model guide to assist PCBUs in managing the health and safety risks of rooftop solar installation.

The SWA Guide to managing the risks of rooftop solar installation work (Guide) contains information on how to identify, assess and control risks associated with solar rooftop systems.

The Guide:

  • Provides information about the safety roles and responsibilities of all involved in rooftop solar installation, from retail and supply of the solar system to its planning, design, installation, testing, commissioning, repairing, maintenance and removal.
  • Details the precautions and methods to ensure a safe installation of rooftop solar systems. This includes what to check for before work starts, safe entry and exit, fall prevention, electrical safety and other risk factors for installers.

While the Guide may be helpful, it may not have been expressly adopted by your local jurisdiction. This Guide therefore does not override specific State or Territory guides on solar panel installation or other guidance or codes of practice that might apply in your jurisdiction.  For example, on managing the risks from falls, electricity, plant or other hazards that might be present.

Members are also reminded that the requirements mentioned in the Guide support compliance with the model WHS Act and model WHS Regulations that do not apply in a jurisdiction unless adopted in that jurisdiction. You will need to check that these requirements have been adopted in your State or Territory, and the guidance that is available from your local WHS regulator.

The links to the relevant State or Territory’s regulator can be found below:
