Installation of glass balustrades

Australian Standard AS 1288 contains a restriction that glass balustrades at heights one metre or over when measured from an adjoining floor level or area provide a handrail that can take an imposed load.

This resource provides three examples of glass balustrades to show how the restriction applies in each case. Included are an example of a balustrade that does not rely on an additional handrail for support, a balustrade that relies solely on a handrail for support, and an ‘assembly’ balustrade with the glass and handrail acting together.

It explains that it’s possible to use a balustrade design outside the scope of the Australian Standard if a Performance Solution is adopted under the National Construction Code (NCC).  However, this necessitates the balustrade or barrier being designed by an engineer who can ensure it provides sufficient structural support. A permit/approval for the building work would also need to be issued.

Access this resource to find out more about how the restriction applies when undertaking a project involving a glass balustrade installation.
