What’s it all about?

This program covers the skills and knowledge needed by professional builders in the low-rise residential sector of the building industry. This qualification is a mandatory requirement for your Builder Licence/Registration in most states and territories.

Who should do this training?

This course is for anybody who is looking to understand more about the residential construction industry. Participants may come with a varied and wide range of construction experience; from little to no experience, to qualified trades people looking to become builders, and construction business owners trying to find their edge in the marketplace.

What do I need before I start?

HIA wants to ensure that the course is right for you and to do this we will make sure that you have:

  • Suitable level of English reading, writing and numeracy skills
  • The ability to research, access and interpret complex documents
  • Basic computer skills in spreadsheets, search engines and word processing
  • Computer and internet access as per the Online Service Standards

How long will it take?

We have a number of delivery options for you to choose from. Our face-to-face and online program will take approximately 6-12 months. The self-paced and RPL delivery options are more flexible but require you to undertake self-directed learning through research and assessments.

Required resources

During your training, participants must have access to specific resources. Resources include the various codes and standards that are relevant to the construction industry. If you do wish to purchase these materials, your regional HIA Training staff can provide you with a list of these resources and their indicative costs.

Nationally Recognised Training details

CPC40110 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building)

To achieve this qualification, you must demonstrate competency in:

  • 16 nationally recognised units of competency
  • 13 core units [C]
  • 3 elective units [E]

+ NSW and Victorian Participants. In addition to the qualification (16 units), we offer participants in NSW and Victoria one (1) additional unit of competency to meet builder licence and registration requirements in Victoria. This will increase the duration of the course by approximately one (1) week, including one (1) day of face-to-face training. On completion of this training, participants in NSW and Victoria participants will receive a qualification + a statement of attainment for the additional unit of competency completed.
