What’s it all about?

This training program provides a diverse range of skills and knowledge needed by professional estimators in the low-rise residential sector of the building and construction industry.

On successful completion you will be issued with the Nationally Recognised qualification:

  • CPC40308 Certificate IV in Building & Construction (Estimating)

This training program consists of an industry supported combination of nine (9) short courses, providing a progressive and practical understanding of each of the skill areas.

  • Working with Others
  • Building Contracts
  • Apply Risk Management
  • Estimating & Tendering

Who would do this training?

Estimators, or those wishing to progress into this role, who are currently working in the low-rise residential sector of the building industry.

What do I need before I start?

HIA will conduct a pre-enrolment review with you to make sure that this program is suitable for your needs, current skills and experience.

  • Suitable level of English reading, writing and numeracy skills
  • The ability to research, access and interpret complex documents
  • A current Construction Induction Card
  • Knowledge of building terminology
  • Access to a building site.


  • at least basic computer skills in spreadsheets, search engines and word processing.

How long will it take?

This qualification could take you between 6-12 months to complete, depending on how it has been scheduled in your region.  You will need to commit to 22 days of face-to-face learning time for this training. Outside of this allocation of time, you will need to undertake self-directed learning through research and assessments.

Required resources

During this training, participants must have access to specific resources. Resources may include various Codes and Standards that are relevant to the subject matter. You may already have some or all of these resources, however it would cost approximately $960 for HIA members to purchase them all (correct at time of publishing). Your regional HIA Training staff can provide you with a list of these required resources and their indicative costs.

To achieve this qualification, you must demonstrate competency in:
15 nationally recognised units of competency.

  • 8 core units [C]
  • 7 elective units [E]
