NQ President's report

{{ tag.label }} {{ tag.label }} $vuetify.icons.faTimes
Along with my fellow committee members, we continue to be the voice of our industry and address the current challenges of North Queensland. We stand together and focus on the future.

Kent Hams

HIA North Queensland President

I am honoured to be elected as HIA North Queensland President for the 2023-2025 term. I look forward to working together with the Regional Executive Committee to address our member issues at a national, state, and local level.

I would like to acknowledge outgoing North Queensland President Peter Cavallo for his exceptional leadership through an extremely challenging time in our industry. Peter’s strong leadership has bettered the position of HIA North Queensland, strongly promoting the needs of the housing industry both regionally and nationally.

The North Queensland Committee has been actively advocating for policies supporting housing growth across regional Queensland. Part of this includes the expansion of the First Home Owners Grant to include existing properties, providing the opportunity for homeownership to become more accessible to our young people.

The challenges of ongoing housing supply, skill shortages, silicosis and the upcoming NCC changes affect all our regional communities. We have advocated for policies supporting the industry, such as streamlining approval processes, removing barriers within the planning scheme, and changes to Stamp Duty.

While we have seen successes, we recognise that much work still needs to be done. As a committee, we will continue our efforts to ensure that the housing market across North Queensland remains accessible and affordable. To do this, we need to build more housing to meet the community’s needs.

We will continue to push to remove the blockages and unlock the opportunities for residential housing across regional Queensland. I look forward to leading the voice of our members during my tenure as HIA North Queensland President and continuing to see our region thrive.
