As year draws to an end, it is a good time to celebrate our industry successes and appreciate the hard work and the incredible achievements of our members and their continued ability to deliver the highest quality of homes and service to their clients.
When we look back at the 2024 year, we have experienced challenges, and we have also experienced successes. The housing supply challenge will continue through into 2025, as a region we are still seeing consistent work flowing through and HIA will continue to work with all levels of government to reduce red tape that are adding costs and working to bring more trades into the regional markets.
With a new state government now in place, it was good to see the new government implement one of HIA’s advocacy items in the reduction of stamp duty for first home buyers. Hopefully this is not the last supporting mechanism from our new state government.
As a region we also released our HIA Matters podcast series bring information and topics that matters to our members in a way they can listen and watch at a time suitable to them. Check out the 3 versions released below, with more due to 2025.
In front of a packed house of North Queensland’s leading residential builders, designers, tradespeople and suppliers in Townsville, this year's housing awards acknowledged the remarkable talent, creativity and achievements of our HIA members who plan and build quality homes, kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor projects across the region.

On behalf of our Regional President Kent Hams and all our HIA staff, I would like to wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas and a bright and happy New Year, and we look forward to continuing to advocate and work on behalf of you our members, and our industry in 2025.

Building approvals for houses in Canberra have hit yet another a new low, with 2024 recording the lowest number for a twelve-month period (680) since records were first published in 1970.

The changes include the deferral of some fire safety requirements and a range of housekeeping amendments.
“Residential building approvals in 2024 increased from the decade low seen in 2023 but were nowhere near the levels needed to meet underlying demand for housing,” stated HIA Economist, Maurice Tapang.
