Building Mentally Healthy Environments

Building Mentally Healthy Environments

Mental illness is more common than you might think. Three million people in Australia are currently experiencing anxiety or depression. Every day, eight people take their own lives. Studies show that one in four people working within the residential construction industry is affected by anxiety, depression or substance abuse. Sadly, the suicide rate is double that of other industries.

To combat this, HIA has partnered with Beyond Blue to help build mentally healthy environments. Beyond Blue is an independent, not-for-profit organisation working to reduce the impact of anxiety, depression and suicide in Australia.

Together, we want everyone to have the knowledge and skills to protect their own mental health and be aware of those around them who may be at risk.

Our Mental Health Program gives people the knowledge to recognise when their own mental health is sliding and the confidence to support those around them. We aim to tackle the stigma, prejudice and discrimination and make anxiety, depression and suicide part of everyday conversations. We empower you to break down the barriers that typically prevent people from speaking up and reaching out.

Together with Beyond Blue, we have developed a range of tools, resources and services to help you create mentally healthy environments. Alongside this, the HIA Charitable Foundation (HIACF) is a major partner of Beyond Blue.

The Foundation recently funded a three-year plan for a National Suicide Prevention Research and Campaign with Beyond Blue. We used the research to formulate an education program for suicide prevention in the building and construction industry – our Mental Health Program.

Our partnership improves the mental health and wellbeing of those working in the residential construction industry and provides much needed funds to continue to prevent suicide and reduce stigma and discrimination.

HIA Mental Health Program

HIA and the HIA Charitable Foundation have teamed up with Beyond Blue to provide resources to help people to manage their mental health in the building industry. HIA understands the stigma surrounding mental health and is offering members the best tools to tackle this issue head-on.

This webinar is designed to provide management strategies, resources and tools to help people to manage their mental health, particularly during challenging times.
