Let’s Build Australia

As we head towards the next Federal Election the delivery of housing for all Australians in cities and our regions must be a priority.

Let’s Build Australia

As we head towards the next Federal Election the delivery of housing for all Australians in cities and our regions must be a priority.

Home ownership is the bricks and mortar that has helped Australia build a stable and vibrant society, but the opportunity to own a home in Australia is a challenge.

The latest home ownership rates report record lows of 61.4% with many Australians not seeing themselves ever realising their home ownership dream.

A well housed population is more productive, cohesive and healthy; the delivery of housing in all forms, across our cities and in our regions must be a priority.

In 2025 HIA calls on all political parties to:

Ensure home ownership is achievable for all Australians.

  • The Home Guarantee Scheme, Help-to-Buy, First Home Super Saver Scheme and similar programs must be supported and expanded.
  • Superannuation must be available to assist people secure a home deposit and home loan.

Support the delivery of a diverse mix of housing types by:

  • Encouraging the private housing market.
  • Understanding that the construction of apartments is critical to boosting the supply of rental properties.
  • Committing to the delivery of more social and affordable housing.

Deliver economic settings that allow residential construction businesses to thrive and that keep the dream of home ownership alive.

Let's Build

Let's Build

Making housing a priority means

Addressing skill shortages

Let's...

  • Build our domestic workforce
  • Reform the skilled migration system
  • Promote trades as a career
  • Target the retention of apprentices
  • Ensure the construction industry is an industry of choice.

Removing the barriers to the supply of housing

Let's...

  • Unlock land supply through planning reforms
  • Reduce tax on housing
  • Cut the red, white and green tape that drives up housing costs
  • Improve housing data to make meaningful and well-informed decisions about housing supply
  • Deliver the infrastructure needed to get land ‘shovel ready’ faster
  • Focus on housing the regions
  • Encourage innovation across the construction industry
  • Support the transition towards net zero.

Establishing financial settings that encourage home ownership

Let's...

  • Remove the restrictions on lending that has reduced competition among banks and often limits lending only to those that already own a home.
  • Focus on a regulatory system that encourages the financial system to support the needs of the Australian people, particularly first home buyers
  • Offer flexible financial arrangements
  • Emphasise the part our financial institutions play to support borrowers, business and improve the housing crisis.

Tell me more

Australia is a wonderful country, but it is simply not good enough that we accept unprecedented levels of homelessness, impossible access to rental accommodation and that home ownership is now a thing of the past.
Debbie Johnson | HIA National President
Our State and Federal leaders need to stop declaring the housing crisis someone else’s responsibility. They need to stop politicising housing and get past petty issues that tinker around the edges, at the same time providing them with an opportunity to avoid dealing with the most basic issue – we are not building enough homes.
Jocelyn Martin | HIA Managing Director
