At the Victorian Region Annual General Meeting earlier this year, I am proud to say it was confirmed that I would continue to serve as Victorian President.
It is no secret that while we are still busy finishing jobs, times are tough. In such an environment it is not surprising that many people are reviewing and questioning their spending. However, I would argue that for residential builders, HIA membership is more important than ever. It’s an investment in keeping your operations efficient, safe, and competitive.
HIA represents its members in many forums and is influential in getting our message across to local, state, and federal governments. Many policymakers see residential building in the same light as the building and construction industry in general. HIA actively reminds governments, the media and the broader community that residential building is uniquely different.
Without HIA, our industry is at risk of being subjected to government decisions, including new legislation, that reflect the interests of the large-scale building and construction sector.
HIA is also important because of the expertise available to help members. Technical, planning, safety, and legal advisers assist members in dealing with the many challenges confronting a residential building business. These advisory services are available as part of your membership and allow you to contact HIA’s in-house experts to get up-to-date information, advice and support crucial to business success and growth.
As the Victorian government makes changes to the laws and regulations affecting residential building, HIA releases practical guidance for members on how to navigate and respond.
Members also benefit from serving on our many service committees. These committees provide regular information to the HIA team and ensure that HIA’s policy positions accurately reflect the interests and concerns of members, large and small alike.
I strongly encourage members to consider joining a service committee. They provide an opportunity to contribute to HIA policy development and evaluation, and network with industry peers and professionals.
While Building News magazine is no more - this information will still come to you digitally via HIA eNews and our website. I look forward to the opportunity to serve as the Victorian President for a further two years.
Along the way, I encourage you to invest in the future of your business and the Victorian homebuilding industry by continuing to be a vital part of the HIA member community.
