Campbell Walliker, a fourth-year carpentry apprentice with JA&ME Constructions in Leongatha, has been named the 2021 HIA Alec Fuller Victorian Apprentice of the Year.
The win was announced with an online broadcast on Friday 3 December 2021.
In bestowing this honour, HIA’s judges recognised Campbell’s mature and positive approach to learning. They also noted the excellent quality of his work, his ability to adapt to change, and his initiative and willingness to mentor younger apprentices.
Campbell has been entrusted with a leadership role on site, and he credits his experience and training as an SES volunteer with improving both his problem solving skills and his confidence as a tradesman.
“Campbell has demonstrated exceptional dedication to his work, and his is a very worthy winner of this award,” says Fiona Nield, HIA Executive Director, Victoria. “On behalf of all of us at HIA, we congratulate Campbell on his achievements and we wish him every success in the future.”
The HIA-Stratco Victorian Apprentice Awards expanded in 2021 to recognise outstanding apprentices across multiple year levels and a variety of trades in the residential building industry. The overall Victorian apprentice of the year award is named in honour of Alec Fuller, a past president of HIA and a strong supporter of residential housing apprentices.
Campbell was also the winner of the Fourth Year Carpentry award on the night. Other winners included:
- Nicole Binns from A2B Constructions (Judges’ Rising Star and Fourth Year Plumbing)
- Cameron Stephens from Beach House Constructions (Third Year Carpentry)
- Nick Harnetty from Executive Garden Scapes (Third Year Landscape Construction)
- Joseph Walker from David Burford Constructions (Second Year Carpentry)
- Harry Waterfall from HIA Apprentices, hosted by Jeff Taylor Constructions (First Year Carpentry)
“Congratulations to all of the winners and finalists in the 2021 HIA-Stratco Victorian Apprentice Awards Regional Housing Awards,” says Ms Nield. “Apprentices are the future of the residential building industry, and with apprentices of the calibre recognised by these awards, that future is very bright indeed.”
