As we approach the end of the first quarter there’s certainly no shortage of issues shaping the outlook for the sector.
The latest GDP figures for the ACT highlight just how challenging the current cycle has become for residential construction. While the headline result showed modest economic growth in the ACT, the detail tells a more concerning story. It shows that it is only growth in government spending propping up the economy, while the private sector is going backwards.
More concerningly, expenditure on new residential building has fallen to a decade low, while spending on renovations has dropped to a 25-year low.
These figures underscore the depth of the downturn currently facing the sector and reinforce why the policy settings around housing supply matter so much.
This was front of mind in our recent Budget Submission to the ACT, where we outlined a number of practical recommendations aimed at restoring feasibility to home building. If the ACT Government is serious about delivering more homes, the industry needs the confidence to invest, employ and take on new projects.
We’re also encouraging everyone in the industry to engage with the current consultation on trade licensing. Whether you’re a tradesperson, contractor, builder, or someone who engages trades, it’s important that the final framework reflects how the industry actually operates.
The consultation process is an important opportunity for industry participants to help shape reforms that will affect the sector for years to come. We’ll be hosting a virtual info session, so keep an eye on your inbox for an invitation.
And of course, it’s not all policy discussions and gloomy economic data. Our Wagga Golf Day on Friday 20 March is just around the corner, and we’d encourage members in the Riverina to get along if you can. It should be a great afternoon on the course and a good chance to catch up with members from across the industry.
As always, thank you for your continued engagement and support.
