Jethro Urwin from APEX WA Carpentry Solutions in Western Australia has won the 2023 HIA Australian Apprentice Host Trainer award.
APEX WA Carpentry Solutions boasts a reliable team of carpenters who specialise in roof carpentry, timber framing, truss installation and cladding. Jethro Urwin leads the able team and hosts a number of apprentices; always encouraging his apprentices to work to the high standards of the business.
“Jethro mentors apprentices not only about their trade but in their personal lives as well,” commented a judge.
An apprentice’s glowing interview stated, “Jethro always encourages us, telling us it is important to spend time with family and friends rather than doing overtime. He takes great interest in our lives,” he concluded.
Apprentices feel they are a valued part of the team, with Jethro acknowledged as a great boss and mentor. More experienced apprentices are given opportunities to complete a range of tasks and lead younger apprentices, and are encouraged to learn onsite while completing extra training.
Jethro makes himself available at all times for questions and helps his apprentices forward their career in the industry. Apprentices often stay with Jethro as a tradesman while they gain the necessary skills to start their own carpentry business.
The HIA Apprentice Host Trainer award recognises the host of an HIA apprentice for their significant contribution to develop an apprentice’s on-site skills along with their knowledge of building techniques, and for encouragement of apprentices to succeed in the future.
The award also recognises the importance of safety management on worksites and the resulting wellbeing role of a host trainer when mentoring an apprentice.
The announcement was made at the 2023 HIA–CSR Australian Housing Awards on Hamilton Island on 20 May.
