2023 HIA Australian Apprentice of the Year
HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards
Winner: Bethany Mercieca, Blue Eco Homes
Bethany Mercieca from NSW was recognised as the HIA Jim Brookes Australian Apprentice winner during the 2023 HIA–CSR Australian Housing Awards on 20 May, the accolade acknowledging her outstanding skill set and demonstrated potential in the industry.
Apprentice Bethany has a strong work ethic and is dedicated to her craft with host Blue Eco Homes. She has built meaningful relationships with co-workers, suppliers and clients through excellent communication. Bethany is committed to safety and has excellent problem-solving skills, showing that her level of competency is well above her apprentice level.
She is currently running a certified passive house project with direct supervision, and is motivated for better outcomes for herself and the industry. Bethany speaks at schools and acts as a mentor to young people considering a trade career, while also being involved in industry committees and is a great asset and example to the building industry.
The HIA Jim Brookes Australian Apprentice award, partnered by Stratco, celebrates the achievements of future tradespeople and recognises excellent trade knowledge, quality building work and solid trade school results.
The award was named after Jim Brookes, an avid supporter of young people and their training in the industry, who worked with James Hardie in supporting the HIA Training Foundation while it was active.
