This sophisticated renovation/addition project involved a complex, but exceptionally sympathetic and painstaking, restoration to a heritage-listed 1856 bluestone residence, in tandem with a supremely modern double-storey extension.
The project was named the 2023 HIA Australian Renovation / Addition Project winner for Victoria’s BCG Constructions.
From the handcrafted stonework and powerful concrete walls to the polished Venetian plaster ceilings and a highly detailed geometric steel staircase, this home is all about creating wonder with the cohesion of old and new materials.
Standout features include the marble-clad kitchen and bathrooms and the beautiful joinery in the ladies’ lounge, library and formal dining room. Unexpected design moments, such as the glass link to the secluded rear master suite, add to the home’s dramatic appeal.
The fastidious skills of the builder and trades, in particular the stone mason, are evident in every perfected element, which when combined together, create a breathtaking fusion of old-world glamour and ultramodern elegance to this architecturally significant colonial landmark.
The home was announced the winner at the 2023 HIA–CSR Australian Housing Awards on 20 May at Hamilton Island.
The HIA Australian Renovation / Addition Project, partnered by COLORBOND® steel, is awarded to a project which involves structural building works on an existing individual house or residential building. Often, as in this case, projects include both an extension and a renovation, while conversions of non-residential buildings into homes are also able to contend.
Celebrate the highest level of achievement for the "best of the best" in the residential building industry for award winning designs and builds from across Australia.
