Residential Design

HIA-CSR ACT and Southern NSW Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards

Winner: DNA Architects

Perched within the canopies at the top of Ngunnawal Land, The Nest is a beautiful interpretation of how the home, hobbies and friends can be intrinsically interwoven with design. As you enter this home through its towering 4.5m, feat of engineering, Zinc shingle door you are met with uninterrupted views of the Canberra skyline. This view was to be integrated into the design of the home from the beginning with structural glazing and carefully placed supports allowing views from nearly any place in the home. Having worked with the owners on their previous home and experiencing firsthand how they lived & entertained, this has given the architect great insight into how the spaces could be arranged. This can be seen with the the upper level of the home designed as their entertaining haven with the theatre, dining, lounge, kitchen, bar and large elevated terrace & pool. This level also accommodates the laundry, spacious study, and the master suite. We can't forget the garage at this level which is also home to a car lift to transport the owners priceless collectibles to the lower level where they are kept in pristine condition in the basement museum. Downstairs has been designed and separated for practical reasons. The three bedrooms with their own ensuites and living space are the perfect home away from home for their family and grandchildren when they visit. There is also a workshop for the owners hobby & business, which has a gorgeous wedge window which is equal parts sculptural as it was a practical need, allowing just the perfect balance of light for her craft requirements. The hero of the lower level is without doubt the car museum and automobile memorabilia. The subtle use of material to disguise doors and handles throughout produces a clean, simplified space. The variety of textures and light bring the spaces to life at different times each day allowing the homeowners to use the home as their canvas to showcase their life. Outside, the pockets of landscaped garden blend with the external design of this impressive home. The judges remarked that this modern concept included clever design solutions, creative experimentation with engineering solutions and was matched to the clients dream concepts. A home that was designed well and beautifully resolved into reality.
