This two-story 1960's duplex remodel in Curtin overcame site constraints and an existing layout to create a modern, energy-efficient family home with spacious, well-lit living areas. Rather than leaving their beloved neighbourhood, the clients chose to transform their aging duplex within its existing footprint. The original home had a disconnect between the living, kitchen, and dining spaces, with the extension feeling isolated. Moreover, it was thermally inefficient with a low EER rating of 3.4. Through clever planning, the updated layout enhances connectivity between living areas and improves the flow to the outdoor entertaining spaces. The new extension, mostly within the previous footprint, features a raked roof design that maximizes the benefits of the northern orientation, enhancing both the spatial and interior qualities of the home with the revamped design boosting energy efficiency to an impressive 7.2 stars. Judges were impressed with the innovative use of design on the challenging block and focus on natural light.
