Renovation / Addition Project $500,000 to $700,000

HIA-CSR ACT/Southern NSW Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards

Winner: Edward Robert Builders and Light House ArchiScience

Maggie's House is a remarkable transformation of an original red brick ex-government home into an energy-efficient family residence that embraces a leafy northern outlook over the neighbourhood and parkland. The design prioritises flexibility for a growing family, connection to established gardens, and solar passive principles, all while reflecting the local streetscape. The homes front elevation mimics the original house, preserving local identity. The split-level design integrates seamlessly with its surroundings, using the existing Canberra red bricks and introducing striking Weathertex and recycled hardwood cladding. A key focus was optimising the northern aspect for thermal performance, achieving an impressive 7.3-star EER. The renovation utilised sustainable practices, retaining existing gardens and incorporating energy-efficient features such as all-electric systems, high-performance insulation, and a 10 kW solar panel system. The home now uses 72% less energy than the average Canberra residence, making it a model of environmental sustainability and liveability while enhancing the beauty and functionality of the space,
