2020 HIA Australian GreenSmart Multi Dwelling Development

HIA GreenSmart Awards

2020 HIA Australian GreenSmart Multi Dwelling Development

HIA GreenSmart Awards

Winner: Light House Architecture & Science and 360 Building Solutions, ACT/Southern NSW

This attractive intergenerational co-housing project in Canberra, dubbed ‘The Village’, includes two residences, a free-standing house and a duplex for three families on the one site.

The development, designed by Light House Architecture & Science and built by 360 Building Solutions, impressed judges so much it was announced as the winner of the 2020 HIA Australian GreenSmart Multi Dwelling Development award in a virtual awards ceremony on 8 September.

Along with incorporating solar passive design principles, detailed thermal performance modelling was used throughout the design to ensure an energy-efficient development. Simulation software uses average hourly weather data and exact solar position, specific to the Canberra region, which can experience extreme temperature variations of 50 degrees between winter minimums and summer maximums.

The simulation software also factors in the exact construction details of every aspect of the build, from materials, insulation levels, glazing performance and dimensions to external shading impact.

The project was built using products that were locally manufactured, materials with recycled content or those that can be recycled at the end of their life cycle.

The judges commented that the development’s ‘thoughtful design was carefully delivered to provide exceptional energy efficiency and comfort’.

The HIA GreenSmart Multi Dwelling Development category is judged on environmental construction methods, visual appeal, liveability and cost-effectiveness.

Light House Architecture & Science and 360 Building Solutions also took home the HIA Australian GreenSmart Energy Efficiency award in the 2020 HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards.
