Winner: Joe Mercieca for Blue Eco Homes, NSW
Joe Mercieca of Blue Eco Homes sees sustainability as a way of life, and is passionate about changing the way Australian homes are designed and constructed.
The 2020 HIA Australian GreenSmart Professional award winner continually pursues better sustainable practices in his business, and encourages the upskilling of staff and contractors to ensure his exacting standards for environmentally friendly building targets are met.
From a young age, Joe was taught principles of sustainability from his father and his passion still inspires the ethos of Blue Eco Homes to this day.
He furthers his own education and became a certified Passive House Tradesperson, building a challenging passive house to BAL-FZ standards, and holding open house days to inform and inspire others about the benefits of building high energy rated homes for healthier and sustainable living.
The judges commented that Joe is ‘at the leading edge of passive house and passive solar design’.
The GreenSmart Professional award recognises the HIA Australian GreenSmart Professional who best demonstrates the successful application of the GreenSmart approach in the building industry.
Joe’s company, Blue Eco Homes in the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains, NSW, was also the recipient of several other national awards announced via a virtual awards ceremony on 8 September, including the 2020 HIA Australian GreenSmart Home, HIA Australian GreenSmart Display/Project Home and the HIA Australian GreenSmart Custom Built Home.
