HIA Apprentice Host Trainer Award

This award recognises the host of an HIA apprentice for their:

  • significant contribution to develop an apprentice’s on-site skills.
  • knowledge of building techniques.
  • encouragement of apprentices to succeed in the future.

The award also recognises the importance of safety management on worksites and the resulting wellbeing role of a host trainer when mentoring an apprentice.

Who can nominate?

A host, apprentice or anyone in the industry who knows an outstanding HIA Apprentice host can nominate the host trainer.

What are the steps to nominating a host?

  1. Decide who you are going to nominate and make sure they are participating in the HIA Apprentice scheme.
  2. Review the nomination questions and write your answers in a word doc.
  3. Upload your answers and provide details of one apprentice in the online form.
  4. In July/August HIA will contact the apprentice to ask them the questions below.

Your nomination must address all the criteria, and should be uploaded online as a word document or pdf.

  • Provide a brief summary about your business.
  • How does the host ensure apprentices gain broad experience and the skills needed for their trade? Also provide details on how they assist them with future career planning.
  • What does the host have in place to ensure the safety of the apprentice onsite?
  • How does the host communicate industry changes to the apprentice, such as to equipment requirements and regulations?
  • How does the host encourage and develop the apprentice’s communication skills?
  • What advice would you offer to someone looking to host an apprentice?

You will also be asked to upload the following:

  • Image of host take on-site
  • Image of host and apprentice taken on-site
  • Business logo

Apprentice interview

Following the close of nominations, HIA event staff will arrange a telephone interview for the hosts’ apprentice with the judging panel. This interview completes the entry and judging can be finalized.

The apprentice will be asked the following questions in the interview

  • Give examples of tasks you normally complete on a daily basis.
  • How does your host ensure you gain the necessary skills and experiences for your trade?
  • How does your host keep you safe onsite? How are you involved in onsite and workplace safety?
  • What advice would you offer to someone looking to start an apprenticeship?

Judging

Judging is carried out by a panel of judges comprising of industry representatives. They will review your submission alongside all other applicants. Once finalists have been selected, HIA will contact each nominated apprentice to arrange a face-to-face interview.

Judging will take place between July and August.
