This award recognises the management of a small business in the residential building industry that has a strong trading record, good levels of customer service, and is able to demonstrate excellence in growth; financially and/or in client numbers.

HIA National Awards

Your entry is based on a written submission which addresses the judging criteria below. It is important to address each criteria. A good submission also provides examples (where applicable).

In addition to your written submission the online application will also ask you to upload:

  • two (2) high resolution images of your staff in landscape orientation
  • a digital company logo.

Judging criteria

Each of the following criteria must be addressed as part of your written submission. Submissions can be uploaded online as word or pdf documents.

Business summary

Please provide a brief history and summary of your business covering the questions below

  • How long has your business been operating?
  • How many staff and trade contractors do you have working for you?
  • What geographic area(s) do you service?
  • Who is your target market? E.g. first home buyers, third home buyer, middle income families. Provide an explanation on why this is your target market.

Business achievements
  • Provide detailed information on the key achievements of the business, particularly focusing on the past 12 months.
  • What has been your proudest milestone achievement in your business to date, and why?
  • What effect have these achievements had on the business/customers/staff/other stakeholders?
  • Does the business have further achievement goals in the near future?

Business growth
  • Outline your growth strategy or provide information/reasoning for not growing your business.
  • What opportunities do you see for change in the short- and long-term?
  • What are/will be the impacts of growth on your business?

Business and financial management
  • How do you monitor revenue and profit/loss, along with controlling overheads and spending?
  • Outline your back office management practices including managing the everyday accounts and cash flow.
  • Provide details on staff management and roles, including the functions outsourced to third parties.
  • How do you ensure you remain a viable business?

Marketing and client management
  • Provide details on the type of marketing strategy employed.
  • How do you measure the effectiveness of your marketing strategies?
  • How do you handle customer enquiries? Provide details on sales and contract administration.
  • Describe how your business interacts with its customers to achieve genuine customer satisfaction. Include details on your customer touch-points and how you ensure customer service is maintained.

Judging

Judging is carried out by a panel of judges comprising of industry representatives. Judging will take place at an HIA office or another designated office and will be based on the information provided by the entrant.

Presentation of winners

Winners will be announced at HIA Award nights from September to November 2024. Book your tickets with your local HIA office.
