The Sunshine Coast Building Women Luncheon, proudly partnered by Spire Law, is an inspiring event designed to celebrate and empower women in the building industry.  Enjoy a delicious two-course meal while engaging with a panel of knowledgeable and passionate women who are leaders in the field. The panelists will share their unique insights, experiences, and expertise on navigating and thriving in the building and construction industry, providing valuable advice and inspiration to both aspiring and established professionals. Supported by partners including HIA's Women in trade mentoring program, this event promises to be an excellent opportunity for networking, learning, and fostering a community of women supporting women in a traditionally male-dominated sector.

Keynote Speaker

Fiona Simpson MP

First female speaker of the Queensland Parliament, advocate for women’s economic security, multiculturalism, and local communities.

Fiona Simpson is the State Member for Maroochydore, passionate about supporting the Sunshine Coast community. Growing up locally, she understands the pressures families and businesses face and is dedicated to ensuring the region remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family while preserving its natural beauty.

Fiona has been a member of the Queensland Parliament since 1992, with a strong track record in a variety of shadow portfolios, including Health, Transport, Tourism, and Small Business. In 2012, she made history as Queensland Parliament's first female Speaker. Following the 2024 State Election, Fiona was appointed Minister for Women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, and Multiculturalism.

A graduate in Japanese language, Journalism, and Government, Fiona holds a Master’s in Organizational Leadership and has completed an executive leadership program at Harvard. She is also an Australian Institute of Company Directors graduate.

Before entering politics, Fiona was an award-winning journalist. In 2013, she was honored as one of Queensland’s 125 Leading Women. Committed to service, Fiona is a patron of numerous community organizations and works to enrich local lives through volunteer support.

Debbie Johnson

HIA National President

Debbie is a highly experienced development consultant, designer, and builder with nearly 40 years of experience. She has run her own business while dedicating her time, knowledge, and experience to a wide range of industry and government committees and boards. Debbie was appointed as HIA’s Queensland Regional President in 2013 and joined the Association’s National Board in 2017. Over the past two years, she has been a strong support to HIA’s outgoing National President, Alwyn Even. Now, as the HIA National President, Debbie will lead the Association through a challenging yet exciting period for the residential building industry.

Tochau Nguyen

2024 Winner of  HIA Queensland Professional Woman of the Year Award

Tochau has truly excelled as a leader, exceeding expectations with her remarkable contributions to Buildsafe. Her proactive management during critical challenges, such as navigating credit limit reductions and implementing risk management strategies, showcases her exceptional problem-solving skills. Tochau has driven 30% company growth by and transformed organizational culture to be more data-driven. Beyond her professional achievements, Tochau's dedication to mentoring and education, including her role in guiding future CFOs and contributing to industry symposiums, underscores her profound impact on the industry.

Courtney Burns

Courtney excels as Azura Building Group's Business Development Manager with her strategic vision and leadership. Her dedication to fostering a positive work culture and her commitment to professional development significantly enhance team performance and business success. Known for her effective communication and mentorship, Courtney's influence extends beyond her role, driving industry excellence and team cohesion. Her proactive approach and balanced leadership make her a standout professional in the building industry.
