Stretch your legs and your thinking through Melbourne’s city centre on an insightful guided tour exploring the city’s architectural history, present and future. As your guide leads you along Birarrung Marr Parkland, learn about the environmental impacts of colonisation, the health of our waterways and the reimagining of the ‘environment’ in an urban context.

The eco-focused walking tour will encourage you to absorb design features of notable landmarks, such as Federation Square, through a sustainable lens, contribute to conversation on changing building practices and finish up with a visit to Council House 2. Hear about data being unlocked, helping to shape future regulations and illuminate emerging building trends. Future Net Zero and Electrified Buildings - Simon Croft

As Australia transitions towards net zero buildings, a developing National Energy Performance Strategy will set the energy efficiency policy agenda over the next 5-10 years. This new strategy will consider:

  • Decarbonisation/electrification of buildings
  • Setting targets on limits of embodied emissions of materials going into buildings
  • Fast tracking EV infrastructure into buildings
  • Fully integrated homes and on site storage and generation (on-site solar panels and battery storage)
  • Mandatory disclosure ratings for existing homes
  • Further new building measures to have them zero and energy ready
  • Improving performance of social and community housing

This session will discuss where the policy direction is heading and the opportunities and challenges for the residential building industry.

In this session, the renowned environmental scientist and ABC TV Gardening Australia presenter will offer his observations and key learnings from monitoring the home’s performance over the past 10 years.

Progressive and inspiring, Josh’s house showcases the benefits of sustainable housing to the community as well as operates as an ongoing research and learning lab into high-performance homes. Josh will also present on the upgrades made to the dwelling in line with new technology and low carbon strategies.

Solar Victoria is responsible for the delivery of the Victorian Government’s Solar Homes Program – one of the most ambitious and transformative renewable energy programs in Australia. Its purpose is to boost energy supply, see one million Victorian homes powered by renewable energy in 10 years and create new jobs in the renewables sector.

In this session, learn more about the success of the program’s first 12 months, the challenges faced, learnings and opportunities for future energy efficiency upgrade programs.

Panel Session: Is the energy assessor now the most influential party to a building project’s design and construction?

With continuing NCC energy efficiency upgrades, the role of energy assessors in building design and achieving compliant outcomes is becoming more critical than ever before. At what stage of the design and construction process should they intersect – beginning, middle or end?

Great design and sustainability go hand in hand. Ferrars & York, the carbon neutral apartment building enabled by HIP V. HYPE is a prime example of how a thoughtful, integrated approach to form and functionality can encourage a more conscious and connected lifestyle for residents.

Built on a long narrow site in South Melbourne, the building occupies a prime location close to city amenities and is set up to operate completely from renewable energy. This case study session will dive into the design methodology and features of Ferrars & York which make it a truly sustainable initiative.
