Event detail

In August, National Cabinet agreed to an ambitious new target to build 1.2 million new homes over five years. This is an additional 200,000 new homes above the National Housing Accord target agreed by states and territories last year.

To meet the target of building 1.2 million homes in five years, industry will need to build 240,000 each year. While some critics have argued that the target is unachievable, a coordinated effort by all levels of government and across portfolios makes it achievable.

At this upcoming economic update, HIA’s Chief Economist, Tim Reardon present on the current state of the international, national, and local housing markets. In this discussion, Tim will address the likely challenges in delivering 1.2 million new homes—and what opportunities that might come up.

Following the keynote presentation, our expert panel will lead a discussion on the local implications and considerations for achieving the housing targets such as:

  • Eliminating hurdles to streamline the approvals process
  • Workforce capacity to deliver the number of homes required
  • Timelines and impact of cost of construction issues
  • Workforce capacity of other industries and how this can affect housing delivery
  • Gaining more density to help meet targets

Don't miss out on the opportunity to hear from industry professionals and contribute to the conversation on building a sustainable and thriving residential housing market.
