Once a project is finished, do you understand the process surrounding practical completion and handover? How do you seek and recover final payment?
Are you aware that your works are covered by warranties even if the property has been handed over? How do you respond to any defect complaints post completion?
Based on common member enquiries, this session will explore the completion process under HIA contracts, and your ongoing obligations with respect to a completed building project.
Johnny Sakr: Johnny is a Senior Workplace Advisor at HIA, a solicitor admitted by the NSW Supreme Court and an academic for the School of Law at the University of Notre Dame and the University of New England. Before joining HIA, Johnny worked in the Mergers and Acquisitions industry reviewing commercial contracts across the Asia-Pacific region. In conjunction with his industry experience, Johnny’s completion of a Master of Laws has aided him in understanding the intricacies of HIA’s Residential Building Contracts along with the problems faced by the builders in this present environment.
Meredith Frohreich: Meredith is the Senior Workplace Adviser at HIA, part of the Workplace Services team. She has been at HIA for 17 years providing general information and advice to many members on a range of topics, in particular home building contracts, building dispute matters, licensing requirements for contractor licences and employment enquiries.
Meredith has presented at many trade nights over the years and member workshops on Contracts and other business compliance topics , as well as delivering and assessing some of the Certificate IV in Building subjects.
