Advanced Apprentice & Employee Mentoring (AAEM) program

A brighter future for Queensland trades

Advanced Apprentice & Employee Mentoring (AAEM) program

A brighter future for Queensland trades

The HIA Advanced Apprentice & Employer Mentoring (AAEM) Program is an initiative designed to provide comprehensive and holistic mentoring support to the Queensland building and construction industry. Its mission is to guide both apprentices and businesses through their apprenticeship journey, ensuring success and sustainability in our trades.

Our team of experienced mentors offer impartial, expert guidance to both apprentices and employers, helping them navigate the complexities of the apprenticeship journey. We provide tailored support through worksite visits, phone calls, emails, and direct messaging, ensuring flexibility and accessibility throughout Queensland.

 Support for apprentices

Our mentors create a nurturing environment that encourages apprentices to complete their qualifications and carve out a secure career pathway in the construction industry.

  • Work-life balance: giving support to manage the demands of work and personal life
  • Financial and nutritional guidance: providing advice to maintain financial stability and healthy living
  • Mental wellbeing and safety: offering strategies to ensure mental health and workplace safety
  • Literacy and communication: overcoming literacy barriers and improving communication skills
  • Workplace expectations: clarifying and setting realistic expectations in the workplace.

Support for employers

We will collaborate with employers to:

  • Define goals and challenges: identifying and addressing specific goals and obstacles
  • Provide information and strategies: offering practical advice and strategies tailored to the unique needs of each business
  • Referral to services: connecting employers with additional resources and services
  • Management techniques: sharing effective approaches to manage apprentices and ensure their success in the workplace.

 Support for pre-apprentices

We can assist you in navigating the pathway towards a career in the construction industry. We provide tailored guidance for things like:

  • Work readiness assistance
  • Clarifying career goals
  • Identifying unique strengths and achievements
  • Offering insight on where a career in construction could take you.

Eligibility requirements

Apprentices: Must be an apprentice with a construction trade and be a Queensland resident.

Employers: Must work within construction trades, have an active ABN, and be able to demonstrate their principal place of business is in Queensland.

Pre-apprentices: Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident living in Queensland, a Refugee and Humanitarian Visa holder living in Queensland, or Temporary Visa holder living in Queensland, with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residence.

My experience with the HIA Mentoring Program has been positive from the first interaction. The program is distinctly supportive in a number of holistic areas so that no matter who the apprentice is or what age or stage they are at, there is something of value for them.

A need for support

Today's apprentices face a multitude of challenges that can impede their path to becoming qualified and successful tradespeople. Recent statistics reveal that more than 50% of apprentices in our industry abandon their training, a trend that threatens future trade numbers.

In response to this, the Queensland Government in partnership with HIA, through the QLD Workforce Connect Fund, launched the AAEM Program. Our goal is simple – to address this dropout rate and provide steady support to apprentices across all trades of the residential construction industry.

The HIA Advanced Apprentice and Employer Mentoring program is funded through the Workforce Connect Fund, powered by the Queensland Government's Good people. Good jobs: Queensland Workforce Strategy 2022-2032.
