WA Builder Registration Support Program

Builder registration is more than a licence — it’s a gateway to opportunity.

By equipping aspiring builders with the knowledge, skills and support to succeed, the Builder Support Program helps ensure a strong, sustainable and skilled workforce ready to deliver the homes Western Australia needs — now and into the future.

With Western Australia's housing supply under pressure and the need for medium and high-density housing on the rise, supporting new builders is vital to maintaining industry capacity and meeting housing targets. 

What the builder registration support program covers

Applying for your Builder's Registration can be challenging, but HIA is here to support you every step of the way with a structured Builder Support Program designed to provide a clear understanding of:

  • What’s required to become a registered builder.
  • The documentation, structure and systems needed to meet registration standards.
  • How to set up for long-term business success.

Becoming a registered builder in Western Australia is a rigorous process that ensures quality, safety and accountability. 

Session overview

To ensure you have the right information the HIA Builder Support Program includes four sessions (max 3hr per session):

Session 1: Technical Skills for Residential construction

Provides an overview of key technical skills required for effective supervision and delivery of residential housing stock in Western Australia, covering:

  • Masonry construction.

  • Framed construction.

Session 2: Compliance, Safety and Risk Management

Covers changes to waterproofing requirements, followed by Work Health and Safety obligations, including:

  • Responsibilities of a Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU)
  • How to complete a Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS)
  • Engaging subcontractors and managing safety obligations.

Session 3: Best Practice for Small Building Businesses

Provides an overview of best practice for small businesses across two critical areas:
  • Legal and contractual requirements of setting up and operating a business; and,  
  • Management accounting and practices – need to know items for running a business, managing finances, job costing and maintaining cash flow.

Session 4: Builder Registration and Application Support

Provides attendees with a comprehensive overview of the requirements for the builder’s registration and application and support for those looking to finalise their application to become a registered builder.

How the program supports you

The HIA Builder Support Program is a partnership between HIA and the WA Government, designed to help aspiring builders navigate the pathway to registration and build the skills to thrive in the industry.

Additionally, HIA will include ongoing mentoring for the applicants who wish to gain additional access and support from HIA large networks of registered builders and industry professionals to support them establish a successful business. 

Program dates

The sessions will be held on four consecutive Monday evenings at the HIA Training Rooms in Osborne Park commencing Monday 2nd February 2026 at 5.00pm (AWST).

The program will be repeated quarterly commencing:

  • Monday 4th May 
  • Monday 3rd August 
  • Monday 5th October.
