HIA GreenSmart® professional training provides those in the residential building industry with the practical skills and awareness of green building, design and construction.

HIA GreenSmart® training provides you with a practical understanding of green building and design, environmental awareness and skills for more sustainable residential design and construction. 

Designed to help HIA members and non-members get their green credentials and access opportunities. HIA GreenSmart was Australia's first sustainable building and design program tailored specifically for home building. 

HIA members who complete the training then gain access to the other opportunities in the HIA GreenSmart program. Participants will learn the essential know-how to promote their services in this expanding and exciting area of residential building. 

Once completed, you will also have access to further training and a full range of selected industry opportunities and initiatives.

Essential information

What’s it all about?

HIA GreenSmart® professional training is a 2-day course, run Australia-wide, providing you or your staff with recognised environmental building skills for more sustainable residential design and construction. The HIA GreenSmart® program aims to encourage a mainstream application of the benefits of environmentally responsible housing.

HIA members who complete the training will gain recognition as an HIA GreenSmart® Professional.

Once qualified, you will be provided with the HIA GreenSmart® Professional logo, information and material to promote your HIA GreenSmart® professional principles in the marketplace. As HIA GreenSmart® Professionals, HIA members can submit projects to our HIA GreenSmart® Awards.

You will learn about:

  • global and local context of sustainable development
  • thermal performance
  • passive solar design and natural ventilation
  • design and operational issues for water and energy efficiency
  • selection of water and energy-efficient ecologically friendly appliances
  • lighting
  • principles of sustainable building
  • environmental design
  • marketing sustainable housing to clients.

On successful completion of this short course, you will be issued with a Statement of Completion.

What do I need before I start?

To start this program, you must have:

  • a competent level of english; reading, writing, interpersonal and communication skills
  • knowledge of building terminology and practices

All participants will be required to pass a language, literacy and numeracy assessment before enrolment. You can check your knowledge and find out about courses by contacting HIA Training on 1300 650 620.

How long will it take?

You will need to commit 14 hours (equivalent to 2 days) of face-to-face learning time for this short course. Before you enrol, confirm if this course is delivered in a part-time or full-time format.

What resources will I require?

Pen and writing paper.

Who would do this training?

The course is suitable for builders and designers; however, anyone with a passion for increasing their knowledge in the area of sustainable housing will benefit from undertaking this course and networking with other participants.

HIA GreenSmart® kitchen and bathroom professionals training is for kitchen and bathroom professionals who wish to incorporate sustainable practices into their projects.
