As much a piece of art as it is a home, Headland House, built by Bellevarde Constructions in NSW, is a monumental four-bedroom, four-bathroom residence, with a sharp angular facade clad twice in stone and zinc, and cantilevered to create a gravity-defying illusion.
Overlooking a peninsula, the property and its accompanying guest space, Escarpment House, take full advantage of the views, natural light and the seclusion of its stunning location.
The introspective design ensures there is always a sunny spot somewhere inside at any point of the day, while the two outlook balconies that branch off the building offer a spectacular 180° view. Taking in this view becomes a particularly magical experience from behind the 500kg glass panels in the ‘storm-viewing room’, where harsh southerly winds, lightning and rain can be seen dancing across the Pacific Ocean.
This home took out both the 2019 HIA–CSR Australian Home of the Year award and 2019 HIA Australian Custom Built Home, partnered by Stramit, at the 2019 HIA Australian Housing Awards gala dinner in Perth on 25 May.
'HIA is committed to recognising our members who excel in building exceptional homes, kitchens and bathrooms, ' said HIA Managing Director Graham Wolfe. 'These members are reaching the highest standards in workmanship, are innovative, and pushing the boundaries with design.'
NSW members featured strongly at the 2019 HIA–CSR Australian Housing Awards winning six national categories in total, along with Townhouse/Villa Development, Australian Apprentice, Kitchen Design and Professional Medium Builder/Renovator. The awards program is the ultimate platform to present the diverse talents of the nation’s top builders and designers. Winners are selected from state-based finalists, with awards in 22 separate categories.
The Custom Built Home category criteria is for an individual house designed and built on contract, specifically for the site and according to the requirements and brief of a client. The winners of each home category in the HIA Australian Housing Awards program, including Custom Built Home, Display Home, Project Home, Renovation/Addition Project, Spec Home, Townhouse/Villa of the Year and Apartment of the Year, compete for the Australian Home of the Year award.
