More time for what moves you

We all know you can’t buy happiness but there’s something else you can’t acquire – time. So what if you could have more of both? HOUSING speaks to Ben Silver, co-founder of Benzina Zero, on creating time for what matters most.

Time is intangible; we can’t see, touch or hear it, and universally we long for more of it. In today’s fast-paced world, there are so many issues vying for your attention, the days and weeks can slip away. In addition, mental illness is on the rise and self-care becomes a priority for many, but what if you could actually get more time for yourself? Could you get to enjoy what matters most? Maybe you can.

When juggling the commitments of a busy personal life and running a business, finding more time may seem far-fetched. But ask yourself, ‘What’s the true cost to your health and happiness when you are overwhelmed and time-poor?’ When you feel this way, simple things, such as going outside or exercising, can fall further down your to-do list.

Changing lanes

Business owner Ben Silver knows the feeling all too well. As an entrepreneur and father of a young family, he knows that making time takes time – but it’s worth the effort. Ben explains, ‘One day, you realise the most important commodity we have is time. So we need to make the most of it.’

As co-founder of Benzino Zero, a manufacturer and distributor of compact, energy-efficient electric bikes, mopeds and scooters, Ben found an outlet for his passion for environmental and sustainable transport solutions and the opportunity to explore sustainable living concepts.

The business name means ‘zero fuel’, embodying the sustainable movement of people and goods. ‘Our business goal is to encourage people to commute, move product, and deliver goods in a sustainable way for the environment.’

Unexpected progress

A growing business meant that Ben, an avid bike rider and naturalist, found it hard to make time for the outdoors and his young family. So he turned to technology for help, discovering that Reckon accounting software could change how the business functions.

‘Reckon has allowed us to be more hands-off when it comes to bookkeeping. It’s given me more time for the most important things. In fact, I don’t have to get into the office as early as I used to.’

Reckon’s cloud-based solutions are fast, easy to use and accessible from mobile devices. You can monitor your day-to-day income, expenses, cash flow with real-time reporting and a customisable dashboard. Plus, you can track GST and prepare your GST return. Thanks to the versatility of the software, Ben now does what he loves most: ‘I now get to ride my bike to the office; it’s actually my second car. Not only am I spending my time on my health, it’s a relaxing way to get to the office.’

Reckon has helped the business adopt a flexible approach to work by removing the burden of paperwork. Just like Ben, this is essential for small businesses and start-ups who need to manage their time.

‘We’ve implemented Outdoor Wednesdays, which give us a break from the office environment. Here, we develop better ideas than when we’re sitting in the office. And the best part is, we get to hang out with our kids at the same time.’
