Big donation to help mental health of builders

The HIA Charitable Foundation presented a gigantic cheque to Beyond Blue, with the sizable donation planned for mental health initiatives assisting people working in the residential building industry.

A generous donation of $100,000 was handed over to Beyond Blue from the HIA Charitable Foundation in a formal cheque presentation ceremony on 9 December.

The funds will go towards supporting the work of Beyond Blue in providing mental health and wellbeing initiatives for people working in the Australian residential building industry.

In addition to the presentation, Beyond Blue and the Housing Industry Association confirmed they have extended their long-standing partnership and commitment to improving mental health within industry and communities across the country.

‘By extending this partnership to 2021, together with a further donation of $100,000 from the HIA Charitable Foundation, Beyond Blue will be able to continue to support workers across the building industry,’ said Graham Wolfe, HIA Managing Director.

Over the past five years the HIA Charitable Foundation has worked with Beyond Blue to raise awareness and offer vital resources for HIA members.

‘People in the building industry unfortunately have a higher than average rate of mental health concerns, so the support that the HIA Charitable Foundation has provided to us over many years has been especially welcome,’ said Beyond Blue CEO Georgie Harman.

As an industry workers are six times more likely to die by suicide than by a workplace accident, while apprentices are two and a half times more likely to suicide than other young men their age.

‘Beyond Blue encourages people in the building industry to know the signs of mental health conditions, to be there for their colleagues and to seek support as early as possible,’ added Georgie Harman.

These alarming statistics mean that most people know someone who has been touched with mental health conditions. The HIA Charitable Foundation believes ‘mental health starts where we live, work and play,’ and as an industry can make a significant impact to address the problem and save lives.

Since its inception the HIA Charitable Foundation has donated more than $1 million, initially to research into asbestos related diseases and for the past five years in support of Beyond Blue’s mental health initiatives.

Mental health professionals are available at the Beyond Blue Support Service via phone 24/7 on 1300 22 4636 or via www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support for online chat (3PM - 12AM AEST) or email responses within 24 hours.
