Siblings Alice and Joey: Making lemonade

Siblings Alice and Joey: Making lemonade

This brother-and-sister duo are a building dream team: pooling their complementary talents to consciously deliver impeccably finished homes and an ‘extraordinary’ building experience for every client.

Pamment Projects was established by siblings and HIA members, Alice and Joey Pamment, in 2019. As well as building magnificent houses, the pair have been building a formidable reputation for excellence, with their uncompromising workmanship on display in a number of high-end bespoke projects across Sydney.

But it’s not just technical expertise that sets this dynamic duo apart. It’s also their energy and enthusiasm, their can-do attitude, and the thoughtful, considered approach they bring to every aspect of a build.

Growing up on a farm on the Sunshine Coast, the Pamments learnt the value of hard work and problem-solving early on. They even sold their mum’s homemade lemonade at the local markets, learning to interact, count money and be responsible.

Siblings Alice and Joey Pamment, who run Pamment Projects.

‘We were taught to be resourceful at a young age,’ Alice says. ‘We were brought up to look after everything ourselves.

After school, life initially took them in different directions until they both ended up in Sydney – Joey working on building sites, and Alice in interior design. When Joey’s friends and acquaintances started asking him to build for them, the siblings decided to go into business together. They didn’t overthink it, they just did it.

‘We took a risk, and it worked. We picked up momentum quickly,’ Alice says. Their first project was a bathroom and granny flat renovation worth $60,000. ‘Then we did a small duplex, and we just kept building up, getting more warranty, more jobs, hiring more staff,’ Joey adds.

Building the business

Six years on, their homeowner’s warranty is now $25 million, and they have a team of around 30. Alice describes their growth as a ‘gradual trajectory’.

‘We've always consistently grown, but we've known when to hold back. We have said a few times, “lets hold steady and not rush”.’

While Joey modestly implies that the business has grown organically, Alice attributes much of their success to her brother’s stellar organisational and networking skills.

‘Joey's very good at planning ahead. He'll know that in six or 12 months we'll have three openings. He’s good at networking and seeking out the work,’ she says.

‘He would make those contacts, talk to real estate agents, talk to developers, talk to any friends he has in the industry and start to connect with clients and designers.’

Turning point

Their reputation as quality custom builders grew with each job completion and they gradually transitioned from sourcing work from real estate agents and developers to working with architects.

Alice identifies two builds in particular – one in Leichhardt and one in Newtown – that represented a turning point for the business, propelling them into a higher league. ‘After those jobs, people were thinking, we're going to take these guys seriously, and it was a lot easier from then,’ she says.

Along with her interior design qualifications, Alice is a licensed builder, and you’re just as likely to find her onsite as Joey. They add value to each build in different ways.

‘Alice is a good builder. She's organised, meticulous and detail-orientated,’ Joey says. Alongside this, Joey thrives on a challenge: ‘His brain operates well when there’s a lot of complexity and challenges and moving parts,’ Alice explains.

Throughout the build, the Pamment team took on difficult challenges.
Part of the brief was to introduce light and airflow in the home.

Being perfect over the long term

Together, they strive to optimise every aspect of every project – from putting together the right team, to collaborating with clients to ensure each detail will be perfect over the long term.

‘We find out why they're doing the project. We get a good understanding of who this person is and therefore how we need to support them,’ Alice says. Their superpowers are creativity and the ability to respect the architects’ plans while identifying client-centric adaptations. This ‘conscious’ approach is showcased in their recent Randwick project (see box).

Ultimately, ‘we only want the best for our clients’, Alice says, adding that the process of building a home is a team effort. ‘I enjoy all the personal relationships we get to maintain, build, grow and nurture with our team, clients and architects,’ she says.

Joey, also driven by the pursuit of excellence, finds joy in solving problems and working at a more molecular level. ‘I think every builder loves handing over. But for me, it's the process of doing the job. I like to be onsite and talk to the guys about the small details of the project’

Treating challenges as opportunities

Randwick House, a pastel-hued confection of heritage charm and modernist magic, is a stunning showcase of Alice and Joey’s creativity, technical knowhow and synergistic approach.

Designed by Nadine Nakache Designs, the project involved a reimagining of a heritage semi-detached home. The brief was to introduce light and airflow, open the space up to the outdoors and a pool, and add a second storey.

The homeowners, an artist and a film producer whom Alice describes as ‘our coolest clients ever’, were open to Alice and Joey’s professional advice as the build progressed.

‘They would see stuff and say, this is not what we imagined. Let's do it differently. Then we would walk them through the steps of what we could do to achieve what they wanted,’ Joey says.

‘We would walk [the owners] through the steps of what we could do to achieve what they wanted,’ Joey says

While the build only took 11 months, it wasn’t without challenges. Along with the usual difficulties associated with urban construction, such as hitting rock and working right on the boundary, the team discovered that the land fell away from the house beneath the floor.

‘We had to work out a system with different footings all the way around the house and do a suspended slab, and bring all the sewer pipes from the street and all the mains back under that,’ Joey explains. ‘There was a lot of in-the-ground works details that made it hard and complex at the start.’

Throughout the build, the Pamment team treated challenges as opportunities, and the finished result is a vibrant, colour-filled home that unfurls around a show-stopping pink perforated steel staircase.

‘The house is incredible,’ Alice says, adding that the whole job was ‘really fun’.
