Across North Queensland, HIA members continue to deliver homes, support local jobs and keep our industry moving. The issues members continue to raise most often are skills, land supply, approvals, business costs and practical support for business.
A number of regulatory, taxation and workplace changes came into effect from 1 July, adding further complexity and pressure for our members HIA has prepared a summary.
The Queensland 2026–27 State Budget provided some stability for business, with no new taxes or increases to existing taxes. For members, the focus remains on improving housing supply, speeding up approvals, unlocking more development-ready land and maintaining a steady consistency of work across the region. You can read the HIA budget summary.
HIA’s advocacy has also helped secure an important outcome for Queensland’s home building sector, with the Queensland Government deciding not to support proposed changes to workplace exposure limits for nine chemicals, including silica, at this time.
All regions across the north continue to report a strong pipeline of work. This is encouraging, but it also adds pressure around workforce capacity, materials, approvals, productivity and project delivery. Housing demand across North Queensland remains solid, with building approvals showing a 26 per cent increase in dwellings for the 12 months to May compared to the same period last year.
Skills and labour shortages remain among the biggest issues raised by members. HIA continues to advocate for practical measures that support apprenticeships and traineeships, help businesses retain skilled workers and improve access to labour where it is needed most.
Targeted skilled migration may also play a role in helping regional Queensland meet demand, but the process can be difficult for businesses to navigate. HIA has raised with the State Government the opportunity to provide financial assistance to businesses bringing skilled overseas workers into regional Queensland.
