The 2023 HIA-CSR ACT & Southern NSW Housing and Kitchen & Bathroom Awards, were held on Saturday night, 11 November, at the National Arboretum in Canberra.
“The HIA housing awards recognise the skill and professionalism of our members, and their commitment to delivering projects with the highest standard of workmanship,” said HIA Regional Director Greg Weller.
“As we begin to emerge from one of the most challenging periods for the industry, it was also an occasion to acknowledge the resilience of the building industry across the region.”
“The HIA-CSR ACT & Southern NSW Home of the Year as a modernist marvel in the heart of Canberra, showcasing 21st-century architectural innovation. Its iconic, curved and cedar battens rising above the glass lower floor pay homage to the city's mid-century design heritage.”
“From the outside, the house resembles an open garden gallery with glass and brick walls, embracing light and creativity. The soaring timber elements, expansive green areas, and a stunning roof garden reflect the ambition and daring.”
“The Riverina Home of the Year was won by Higginson Homes & Constructions, for a modern 5-bedroom American barn-style home in Gumly Gumly, near Wagga. The design prioritizes northern aspects to maximize natural light year-round, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere and a home to suit the modern family.”
“Mitchell Evans won the Apprentice of the Year category, with judges noting Mitchell’s strong work ethic and passion for his craft with the Image Carpentry team. Mitchell was acknowledged for his commitment to safety onsite and his excellent problem-solving skills,” concluded Mr Weller.

Agreement on Draft NCIF Blueprint an important step forward
“The Housing Industry Association (HIA) took part in the National Construction Industry Forum (NCIF) today and it was encouraging that the Forum reached agreement on establishing a draft ‘Blueprint for the Future’ to drive long-term change in the industry,” said HIA Managing director, Jocelyn Martin.
Building Standards are not planning controls
“The proliferation of building standards in Council planning controls needs to stop now,” said Brad Armitage HIA Executive Director NSW.
Streamlined planning system to deliver more homes for Tasmanians
“It is pleasing to see that should the Tasmanian Liberal Government be re-elected it is committed to planning reform and streamlining approvals that can deliver tangible and improved planning outcomes to get Tasmanians in homes faster,” said HIA Executive Director Tasmania Stuart Collins.

In line with this, HIA notes that the Sydney Water Price Proposal 2025-30 (SW proposal), highlights the critical relationship between the provision of water related infrastructure and housing delivery, and has set its capital expenditure proposal accordingly.
