Built on around 15 acres, the self-sufficient winning house creates a home for a young family with room to move.
Utilising location on the property was important to the design of this energy efficiency house, complimented by a 15kw Solar PV system, Pylontech Lithium batteries totalling 21kw storage, and a plumbed 130,000 litre rainwater tank to supply the whole house and garden.
During the build, materials were selected considering their origin of manufacture, and where possible, recycled. Thermal mass quality was also taken into consideration.
The result is a sustainable, off-grid rural home with considered design and cost effective construction choices that truly adopts the GreenSmart principles. The category is partnered by WoodSolutions.
The 2024 HIA Australian GreenSmart Home – the highest accolade presented at the 2024 HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards – was won by 360 Building Solutions and Light House ArchiScience from ACT/SNSW for a house located in the heart of suburban Canberra. Using solar passive principles and NatHERS energy modelling, the floor plan was optimised to create a new family home with more functional space and better flow and connection. Reuse of salvaged materials along with thoughtful choices.
Despite its relatively small footprint the home pays attention to the basics, showing what can be done with good design, good detailing and quality construction.
HIA Managing Director Jocelyn Martin said HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards recognise HIA members who deliver the latest in environmental design excellence and sustainable building practices.
“HIA is committed to sustainable building outcomes through environmentally focussed design, innovation and construction. Our commitment to recognise excellence has not altered over the 24 years the HIA GreenSmart program has been running. The winners and finalists are at the cutting-edge in their field and demonstrate expertise in building superior performing, energy-saving homes for their clients.
“Each winner and finalist is congratulated for achieving success at a national level,” concluded Ms Martin.
