Ovens & King Builders won HIA Australian GreenSmart Energy Efficiency for a Buffalo Creek home which showcases intelligent design and puts the focus on energy efficiency and sustainability in construction. It is the third time Ovens & King Builders have won this national category.
Low embodied carbon choices include cork flooring and hempcrete wall construction whilst an all electric build ensures the home is net zero ready. Heat Recovery Ventilation brings a constant flow of fresh air into the relatively airtight environment, allowing for exceptional indoor air quality and saving energy. A Photo-Voltaic power supply of 15 kw is a key component of this grid connected, true north facing home.
Overall, the exacting design incorporates all the aspects of a successful Passive House allowing the homeowner to enjoy a beautiful, sustainable home for many years to come. The category is partnered by Miele Australia.
Arden Homes won HIA Australian GreenSmart Display/Project Home, partnered by The Australian Reinforcing Company. Architecturally influenced, the expansive sun court is the centre of the design which allows natural flow, space and style, a theme continued throughout the home.
With features like R2.7 wall batts, R7.0 ceiling batts, and a 6kW solar PV system paired with a Soltaro battery, the home is designed for energy efficiency. Its high-performance thermal envelope—comprising of smart orientation, insulation, double-glazed windows, and superior air-tightness—ensures a stable indoor climate with minimal heating and cooling. Induction cooking, reverse-cycle heating and cooling, and a heat pump hot water service further enhance its eco-friendly credentials.
The 2024 HIA Australian GreenSmart Home – the highest accolade presented at the 2024 HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards – was won by 360 Building Solutions and Light House ArchiScience from ACT/SNSW for a house located in the heart of suburban Canberra. Oska’s House reimagines the classic red brick home, blending tradition with modern innovation. Using solar passive principles and NatHERS energy modelling, the floor plan was optimised to create a new family home with more functional space and better flow and connection.
Despite its relatively small footprint the home pays attention to the basics, showing what can be done with good design, good detailing and quality construction.
HIA Managing Director Jocelyn Martin said HIA Australian GreenSmart Awards recognise HIA members who deliver the latest in environmental design excellence and sustainable building practices.
