Michael joined HIA Western Australia as Commercial Manager in April 2019 and was responsible for leading and driving commercial outcomes across membership, partnerships, events, and for the successful integration of HIA’s local and national commercial endeavours.
“I am delighted to welcome Michael McGowan into HIA’s senior management team as Executive Director - Western Australia,” said HIA’s Managing Director, Graham Wolfe.
“Since joining the Association in 2019, Michael has contributed significantly to HIA’s achievements over the past three years, both in Western Australia and nationally. Michael’s appointment to head the Association’s Western Australian operations at a time of considerable industry challenges and even greater opportunities is a strong reflection of his character, skills and strategic thinking.
“His appointment is further evidence of the strength and depth of talent within the Association,” said Mr Wolfe.
In July 2020, Michael was promoted to Deputy Executive Director-Western Australia, taking on a number of additional responsibilities, including member engagement, member committees, state based policy development, advocacy for industry training, and secretariat for the National Training and Professional Development Committee.
Upon his appointment to the role, he acknowledged this is a critical time for key leadership given the current pressures on industry.
“Since joining HIA in 2019, I have become attuned to the issues our members are facing,” Mr McGowan said.
“Our members have been forced to overcome many obstacles in recent times and it has been our primary concern to protect their livelihoods and ensure their businesses remain viable.
“I have an acute awareness of the main pressure points affecting those within the industry, and know I have an important role to play in working with relevant stakeholders to alleviate some of these concerns.
“I feel delighted to be able to lead the team in Western Australia as we work with our members and the industry more broadly to navigate through some of the toughest material, labour and shipping related challenges we have seen.
“As we move past the era of COVID-19 restrictions with the virus now in the community, our priority is to continue to work closely with Government to attract and retain more skilled workers in order to safely and efficiently sustain this current pipeline of work, as well as limiting cash flow related challenges for builders.
“I very much look forward to working alongside HIA WA President Dean Humphrey, Vice President Tony Ricciardello, and having the ongoing support of HIA National President Alwyn Even, as we work towards achieving the best possible outcomes for industry.”
