“It is hoped that the commitment to the Blueprint will take a long-term approach to redress the behavioural issues that have festered on construction sites for decades. Through the development and implementation of the Blueprint the Forum can shine a light on the current business environment that has allowed the CFMEU to conduct its activities without the accountability or transparency required of the rest of Australian businesses.
“An efficient and productive housing industry is absolutely critical to responding to the current cost of living crisis and supporting the Government deliver 1.2 million homes over the next 5 years. This requires movement of all the levers that affect the delivery of housing including addressing undesirable behaviour on construction sites to ensure the industry is an attractive and safe place to work. As we speak builders are waiting to deliver hundreds of homes over 51 developments in NSW, held up for months by industrial action with Endeavour Energy, Essential Energy and the ETU. Why should the builder and the consumer be forced to wear this cost?
“Since its inception HIA has participated collaboratively with the Forum with a view to building a productive, safe and vibrant building and construction industry. HIA looks forward to continuing this work under the leadership of a government committed to ridding the industry of systemic issues that are putting a further hand break on an already constrained supply of housing.
“HIA’s submission to the Parliamentary Senate Cost of Living inquiry highlighted the fivefold impact of the actions of the CFMEU on housing affordability. The current situation, while difficult, is an opportunity for widespread and meaningful reform, action must be taken to ensure a sustainable, productive, cost-effective building and construction industry to improve housing affordability across the country,” concluded Ms Martin.
