Following advocacy from HIA, SafeWork NSW recently granted an additional exemption to the prohibition on working with engineered stone. The exemption addresses an area of ambiguity in the Work Health and Safety Regulations and provides further scope and certainty to members working on alterations and additions projects, insurance work, as well as kitchen and bathroom projects.
The exemption allows for the temporary removal of existing engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs to enable repair or modification work to the cabinetry or supporting structure below, or to give access to repair or modify some underlying component.
The engineered stone may then be reinstalled in the same location and position. Minor modification to the engineered stone benchtop, panel or slab to enable reinstallation is also permitted. This includes drilling holes for screws, polishing, cutting and grinding work to ensure the benchtop is flush with walls/joints or repairs, due to any damage caused during the removal. The exemption will remain in place in NSW until otherwise varied or revoked.
