New South Wales

Keeping you up-to-date with the latest news, insights and advice across your region.

The team and I have been busy during this first quarter meeting with many Members of Parliament and senior bureaucrats responsible for running the building and planning legislation that impacts our members in NSW.

One of the things we discuss with all of them is the looming skills shortage in NSW. Many members tell me that right now, trades are calling them looking for work and that makes sense considering the very low levels of new building work happening right now.

But imagine for a second that every project we had stuck in the NSW planning system (or even half of them) went live tomorrow. We would feel the shortages of trades fairly quickly. In fact, many regional areas are already feeling it. By our analysis in NSW we have a shortage of about 30,000 skilled workers and we still struggle to attract young people to join our industry.

I would like to hear from you.

What are the barriers holding you back from putting on an apprentice at the moment and, what are your ideas on what could alleviate the problem?

Also, if you want to take on an apprentice please let me know and I can put you in touch with our team to help you out.

Researchers give pre-apprenticeship training the nod
