In 2015, HIA SA fought long and hard in opposing the introduction of the Environment and Food Protection Area around Adelaide which, in essence, constrained land for housing.
Despite our opposition, the line which represented an urban growth boundary went ahead.
Recently, Premier Malinauskas announced the government's intention to amend the boundary to allow for much needed future land for new homes. This is great news.
The reason for our opposition in the first place, was our position that constraining land available for development would only push up demand and increase the price, and in fact, that is what has happened.
It is imperative that the government be supported in introducing these changes so that our industry can grow and thrive, and our states housing needs be met. Large master-planned developments that will be required to house future South Australians take years and sometimes decades to bring to fruition. So enabling growth, not restricting it, well ahead of when it is required, must be the way forward.
