Assisting the bushfire rebuild process
The government project includes:
- Developing Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) mapping for affected areas such that a BAL certificate may not be needed
- Providing BAL certificates for all other sites where the BAL mapping does not cover
- Supporting BAL-capping for certain sites, so that sites normally in the most extreme risk level (BAL-FZ) can rebuild to a lower BAL category.
This resource explains how the BAL-capping will work for new buildings in bushfire-prone areas. Building to a lower standard that BAL-FZ can be less expensive and can provide some financial relief to those who are rebuilding.
It goes on to outline how local councils will need to grant approval for BAL-capping, but that they will generally seek the RFS’s advice for any approvals that fall within the higher BAL categories.
