Continuing Professional Development in Tasmania

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a compulsory program in Tasmania that mandates certain building services providers and construction industry practitioners to complete ongoing, industry-relevant training and education as a prerequisite for licence renewal. This resource outlines the requirements and provides guidance on how to fulfill your CPD obligations.

What is CPD?

CPD ensures licence holders in building and construction maintain the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to perform safely and meet industry standards. It covers technical training, business skills, legal knowledge, and professional development through approved activities.

Measured via a points system, CPD requirements vary by licence category and must be completed within the one- or three-year licence period for renewal. Compliance is monitored by Consumer, Building, and Occupational Services (CBOS).

What are my CPD requirements?

Licence holders must fulfill CPD obligations by completing a mix of skills maintenance and development activities within their one- or three-year licence period.

CPD is assessed via a points system, with activities to be undertaken consistently, not just before renewal. Each licence category specifies an annual average and a three-year minimum requirement.

Requirements for contractors

Contractor licence holders must keep a register of employees performing licensed work, including licence details, qualifications, competencies, and CPD points. CBOS may audit this register, which must be provided upon request. Failure to comply is an offence under the Occupational Licensing Act 2005 (Tas).

The register should be accessible to employees for CPD certification during licence renewal. Employees are responsible for notifying employers of additional CPD activities to include.

How do I get points?

Approved CPD activities include conferences, workshops, online programs, trade events, webinars, and technical journals. These must be nationally accredited (e.g., by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) such as HIA) or CBOS-approved, with some activities subject to point caps.

CPD points are allocated at CBOS’ discretion and may vary. For example, a three-hour training/briefing session for Building Services Providers may earn fewer points than the standard one point per hour. Always confirm activity approval and point allocation with the provider.

The following tables outline the general guidance on the maximum CPD points and limits available for various activities:

Record keeping

Licence holders must confirm their CPD compliance during licence renewal processes and retain records, as CBOS may audit them.

Responsibilities:

  • Employee: you and your employer must maintain records.
  • Sole practitioner: you are solely responsible for maintaining records.
  • For independent CPD, notify your employer and keep a record.
  • When changing employers or becoming self-employed, obtain your CPD record.

Recording CPD

Document the date, course, provider, CPD points, and retain certificates or evidence. For research, include the purpose, journal/website, and article details.

HIA CPD tracker and resources

HIA provides a CPD tracker on your dashboard through our website, where CPD activities such as workshops, webinars, and information sessions are recorded. Access “My CPD” to track your progress and view upcoming HIA events, training courses, and learning on demand that earn CPD points.

CBOS resources

CBOS offers resources to help licence holders meet CPD requirements, including a CPD events calendar, approved training providers, and online training materials on their website.
