Queensland Public Holiday Calendar 2023

Employees will be entitled to the regional public holiday where their principal place of employment falls.

Show day public holidays: Employees will be entitled to the regional public holiday where their principal place of employment falls. There may be additional regional show days that may apply in your local area listed by the Queensland Government.

Part-day public holidays: Where a part-day public holiday is declared, all employees will have the right to refuse to work on the part-day public holiday if the request to work is not reasonable or the refusal is reasonable as provided for in the National Employment Standards.

Shut down period: Employees under the Building and Construction General On-site Award 2020 (clause 38.3) and Joinery and Building Trades Award 2020 (clause 32.9) may be directed by the employer to take leave during the annual shut down period, however, they must be given at least two months’ notice.

Performance of work: Work can be performed on public holidays subject to noise restrictions from the relevant local council or state authorities. Requests for employees to work on a public holiday must be reasonable considering a variety of factors and penalty rates may apply.
