Emerging Builder Award

This award recognises a registered builder whose competencies, future aspirations and achievements make them stand out amongst peers. The builder must have commenced a business in the residential building industry and will be asked to address the judging criteria in a written submission.

HIA National Awards

Your entry is based on a written submission which addresses the judging criteria. It is important to address each criteria. A good submission also provides examples (where applicable).

In addition to your written submission, the online application will also ask you to:

  • upload two (2) high resolution images of your staff - photos to be taken in landscape mode (horizontal) NOT portrait mode (vertical). See our photographic requirements page for more details.
  • upload a digital company logo.

Eligibility

The builder must have been licensed for at least one (1) year but no more than ten (10) years, and must be a financial member of HIA at the time of entry until the completion of the awards program.

 

Judging criteria

Each of the following criteria must be addressed as part of your written submission. Submissions can be uploaded online as word or pdf documents.

Business summary

Please provide a summary of your business including how long you have been operating, your background and why you decided on a career as a builder, number of staff, number of trade contractors working for you, which clients you service and the work you perform.

This answer is not assessed but simply provides a background to your business for the judging panel.

Achievements
Provide details of your achievements to date relating to your role as a builder. Achievements can be related to your business or personal achievements, and can be related to academic (training), problem solving/improvements, sales, goals, community, innovation and/or awards.

Industry knowledge
Keeping up to date with industry information, technical details, legal requirements and your responsibilities is an ongoing part of any builder’s livelihood. Detail how you keep informed and how you translate this knowledge to others. Include details on training and upskilling if any.

Industry engagement
Industry engagement and social responsibility are important aspects for longevity in the building industry. Provide information on how you interact within the industry. Include details on how you train others, your involvement with industry organisations, meeting/event attendance, and your contribution to activities which positively affect either the environment, society, consumers, employees, communities or other stakeholders as part of your social responsibility.

Safety
Safety in the residential building industry is paramount. Managing Work Health & Safety involves the assessment and minimising of risks that may impact the health, safety or welfare of customers, workmates, visitors to site, contractors, volunteers and suppliers. While it is the responsibility of all workers to provide a healthy and safe workplace, outline the steps you take to ensure safety onsite and in related workplaces.

Customer service/relationships
Describe how your business interacts with customers to achieve genuine customer satisfaction. How do you measure the effectiveness of your customer service practices and ensure customer service is maintained?

Future aspirations
Describe your vision for the future within the industry; relating to your personal and business goals. What do you hope to achieve and what do you have in place to attain your aspirations?

Judging

Judging is carried out by a panel of judges comprising of industry representatives. Judging will take place at an HIA office or another designated office and will be based on the information provided by the entrant.

Presentation of winners

Winners will be announced at HIA Award nights from September to November 2024. Book your tickets with your local HIA office.
