Course overview

Following the introduction of the engineered stone ban across the country late last year, new rules for working with products containing more than 1% silica came into effect on 1 September 2024.

HIA has developed a 3 hour course that meets these specific requirements, as outlined by state work safe authorities.

Why do Silica Training?

It is mandatory for a PCBU, where it is reasonably practicable, to provide any information, instruction, training or supervision necessary to protect all persons from health and safety risks. As building sites commonly involve activities that generate respirable crystalline silica (RCS) , it is necessary for the PCBU to provide this training. HIA’s silica training is a simple and cost-effective solution for mitigation and management of RCS risk.

Which states have adopted these requirements?

VIC

Coming Soon – HIA has developed a separate course for VIC to meet their specific regulatory requirements.  HIA Members in VIC will be notified when this course is available.

QLD & NSW

HIA's course meets their specific regulatory requirements.

SA,WA,TAS & NT

Safe Work and Work Safe regulators have approved the HIA course.

ACT

If you're in the ACT you will still need to complete the mandatory silica course:

You will learn:

  • What is Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS)?
  • Which materials contain crystalline silica and how workers can be exposed to RCS
  • Current requirements for working with materials containing silica
  • Information and tools available for working safely with materials that contain silica
  • Air and health monitoring requirements
  • New Codes regarding Silica exposure
  • Workplace Exposure Standards (WES)

On successful completion of this short course, you will be issued with a HIA Statement of Completion.

This workshop has been approved for CPD (Continuing Professional Development) points as below:

  • NSW – 3pts
